Dads urge Davao City gov’t to fast track food terminal project
DAVAO
CITY, July 5 (PNA) -- The Davao City Council has asked City Hall to
create a working group to study the long-stalled establishment of the
Davao Food Terminal.
The
proposed Davao Food Terminal is part of the agricultural productivity
and employment generation program of the city government.
City
Councilor Leonardo Avila said other cities in the Davao region may beat
Davao City in setting up a food terminal if the city will not act on it
soon.
Avila
said Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy told the Regional Development Council
(RDC) during its recent meeting his city will set up its own food
terminal if Davao City is not serious about its proposed food terminal.
The
Davao City food terminal was proposed during the 13th city council by
then city councilor Mabel Robillo. It was proposed to be located at the
24-hectare property of the National Development Corporation (NDC),
formerly owned by the Davao Ramie Textile Corporation (Daratex) in
Toril district, this city.
There
were initial discussions between the Department of Trade and Industry
(DTI), NDC, and local government officials but the project has not
taken off.
The
food terminal is envisioned to be a complex of manufacturing, trading
and export centers for agricultural produce in the region. Avila
said employment generation and potentials for export for local produce
are benefits that should prod City Hall to fast track the food terminal
establishment. (PNA)
