MANILA, Oct 1 (PNA)-- The Philippines will host the 9th Asia Pacific Manning and Training Conference at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza on November 4-5, 2008.

Organized by the UK-based conference specialists, Lloyd’s List Events, the conference theme is dubbed “Applying New Strategies to Address the Crewing Crisis.”

Kathryn Barnard, Lloyd’s List Events conference producer, said that the delegates will be brought up on the latest developments in the Philippine Manning Industry’s Roadmap and learn how national manning agencies are working together to ensure the continued supply of quality Filipino seafarers.

The conference will be chaired by Capt. Richard Coates FNI, president of the Nautical Institute, who will preside over presentations and panel discussions covering a broad range of topics.

Topics include an analysis of current manpower supply and demand, an appraisal of industry and training institute initiatives in retaining crews and enhancing standards, as well as a review of international regulations.

”The conference comes as a critical time of international ship officer shortages and provides a unique forum to explore ways to resolve the crisis that is currently strangling the global shipping industry,” said Ole B. Stene, Inter-Manager President and Aboitiz Jebsens Bulk Transport Corp. President.

The event will also feature a pre-conference workshop on “International Maritime Resource Management” to be held on November 3 at the same hotel.

To allow more local participation, organizers have considerably reduced the conference fees. Philippine residents who register on or before September 1, pay only UK150 pounds.

On the other hand, Asian residents will be charged UK 699 pounds while non-Asian participants will pay UK 899 pounds.

Last year’s conference was attended by over 200 delegates composed of international ship owners and ship managers, as well as numerous manning agents from the Philippines. (PNA)
