2 Filipinos advance, 2 others fail in World Ten Ball tilt
MANILA, Oct 1 (PNA) – Two Filipinos led by top bet Marlon Manalo advanced
while two others failed to make it on Tuesday in the knockout stage of
the World Ten Ball championship at the Philippine International
Convention Center.
Manalo
encountered no problem in beating Italian Fabio Petroni, 9-1, to join
compatriot Victor Arpilleda, one of the surprised local entries, in the
round of 64 of the tournament supervised and sanctioned by World
Pool-Billiard Association (WPA).
Arpilleda, gold medalist in the Straight Ball event of the 1997 Southeast Asian Games, dumped Korean King Woong Dae, 9-5.
However, other local bets Florencio Banar and Elvis Calasang bowed out of the tournament after suffering their second setback.
Banar
bowed to Lee Po-Hsien of Chinese Taipei, 5-9, while Calasang lost to
compatriot, reigning national junior champion Jericho Banares, 3-9, in
the losers’ bracket. Banares must win again to stay in contention.
Reigning
World 9-Ball champion Daryl Peach of Great Britain also advanced into
the next round following his 9-3 triumph over Japanese rival Kazuo
Furuta of this tournament organized by Raya Sports and presented by
ESPN Star Sports, ABS-CBN, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation,
Sofitel Hotel and Resorts, Federland, Metrobank, Alaxan FR, Philippine
Toursim Authority, Star Billiards, Billiards Snooker Congress of the
Philippines, Brunswick, Predator, Philippine Reclamation Authority and
media partners Manila Bulletin, Business Mirror and Tempo.
”I
feel much better now than in my first match,” said Peach, who is still
adjusting to the weather condition in the Philippines.
“I
like my chances in this tournament, but I do believe that it would be a
wide-open race for the title and that includes the ladies in the men’s
turf.
Double
world champion Ralf Souquet made his debut in the WTBC only on Tuesday
and coasted to an easy 9-1 triumph over Patrick Menillo of Italy. The
German ace has vowed to add the ten ball crown to become the first
triple world champion.
“I’m not thinking of anyone, but myself,” said Souquet. “I like my chances and I’m ready to play against anybody here.”
Also
winning were Luis Condo of Austria, Christian Tuvi of Uruguay, Jonni
Fulcher of Scotland, Alwi of Indonesia, Charlie Williams of the United
States, Sascha Tege of Germany, Fajad Mohmmadi of Qatar, Lu Hui-Chan,
Ko Pin Yi and Chu Hung Ming of Chinese Taipei, Yannick Beaufils of
France, Fu Che Wei of Chinese Taipei, Markus Juva of Finland and
