Slate or MDF?

In the long history of billiards, tabletops of billiard tables were made of different materials. They used wood, metal, marble, granite, plexiglass, etc. Eventually, the manufacturers have settled on slate – it’s quite strong, with a fibrous, not crystal structure. Due to its structure, it has excellent cushioning properties, which is essential when playing billiards.

The weight of a cue ball is heavy enough to shake the stone plate, even if it’s a tenth of a millimeter. And if granite (crystal structure) will “spring” under the ball and continue to vibrate, the slate will only make one cycle of vibrations, cushioning the impact.

However, a marble pool table is unlikely to be found today, but you will have to choose between the heavy and light slate tabletop. A light one is a plate of up to 1″ thick, and a heavy slate tabletop is about 1.6-2″ thick.

A new player will not notice the difference between the light and heavy rock, but a pro will know what kind of tabletop is installed on the table after the first shot. Heavy stone provides better ball roll and less bouncing. It’s perfect for billiards, which is valid for lightweight slates as well.

The compromise between price and quality is a table with laminated particleboard. Such tabletops will make noise during the game, and the balls will bounce. The advantage of such tables is their price and weight. Unfortunately, MDF (particleboard) is subject to temperature and humidity drops.

The likelihood that an MDF tabletop will warp, affecting the trajectory of the ball, is much more unpredictable than that of a slate tabletop. A table on a stone is better able to withstand the seasons’ change.

Pool Table Maintenance

You don’t change pool tables like socks. Sometimes they serve for centuries, but only if maintained properly. Like any product made of wood, pool tables are scared of temperature/humidity changes. Three months after the installation, any table requires adjustment.

The wood dries out, connections/joints get loose, and the carpet under the table wears off. The need for adjustment depends on the surface under the table. If it is a quality poured, hard concrete floor, it may not be necessary until the felt is replaced.

Professional assemblers of service companies set up the table every time the cloth is changed. If the floor is soft, deformations may appear, and regular service is indispensable.

The cloth is replaced as it gets worn out. In billiard clubs, the replacement occurs once every six months for the rails and once a year for the felt. It’s better not to drag your feet on the rails, as, due to the ball impact, the rubber cushions get literally “eaten out” in the pocket area, so their configuration changes. The next service visit can end up with a rubber replacement.

The floor should be flat enough and not bend under the table’s weight. Adjusting jacks (in the table supports) allow for perfect leveling of the playing field, but it will not be enough if the horizontal drop of the floor is more than 2″.

It would be best if you did not place the table on the floor with heating – a certain percentage of moisture remains in any, even well-dried wood. If you put the table on the heated floor, the moisture will evaporate, and the table leg will break. Also, do not install a pool table near a heat source (fireplace, etc.). The reason is the same.

The quality of the parts and elements of the table eventually affects its value, so it is better to consult a professional to choose the table that best meets your requirements and financial possibilities.

Typical Mistakes When Buying a Pool Table

Most often, customers make two serious mistakes. When buying, they overestimate their capabilities. And it’s not about the thickness of the wallet but about the characteristics of the room in which the table will be located. In most cases, manufacturers specify the minimum size of the room in their catalogs. For a comfortable game, you need to throw a little more, so that there was room for a swing. Pay attention to the floor where the table will stand. The harder the floor, the better – this minimizes unnecessary vibrations and wobbling. Why are pool tables green?

Billiards descends from a long line of outdoor games, which involves sticks and balls. When the games were brought indoors, green was chosen for a table cloth to mimic the color of grass.

A 10′ pool table will require a 22′ x 15″ room, and 12′ table will need a 22′ x 16′ room.

Will a pool table fit in a pickup truck?

Yes. But it depends on your skills, several people to help you, and, of course, your pool table and pickup truck sizes. Moving in pieces (coated in soft and dense cloth) is recommended. It’s heavy, and you don’t want to get injured or damage your table.

Will a pool table fit in a single garage?

Measure your table – there has to be at least 48″–58″ of clear space around it in your garage. If your pool table is rather large (9′ x 4’5″ or more), then you need at least 63″ on all four sides of the table. That is a bit more than 5 feet from all the sides.

Will a pool table fit in my basement?

Check your table dimensions – you have to have 5′ of clearance on each side of the table because a standard cue size is just under 5′. Combine that with your pool table rail width, and 5′ is proper clearance for play.

Can pool tables be disassembled?

Yes. You will need a screwdriver with sockets, 14-15mm wrench, staple puller or a flathead screwdriver, flat head bit, Phillips head bit, a few moving blankets, a box for hardware, marker (to mark the table as you’re taking it apart).

Start with the drop pockets, then proceed to rail bolts underneath the table (put them in the box), remove the rail system (lift carefully, turn it over, and lay it back on the table). Unscrew the corner brackets with a drill to remove the corner castings. Keep all your hardware in a box in separate pouches. Detach the aprons using the screwdriver to unscrew the bolts.

Once they are off, wrap them up nice and neat. Remove the pocket caps using a 14mm ratchet wrench to break them loose. Put them into your box and wrap up the rails. Clear the space. Pull the staples from the bed. You can use a magnetic bowl to catch the staples and avoid injuring your feet. Pry them back with your staple puller or use pliers for direct pulling out if they’re stuck.

Make sure you have removed every staple. Remove the felt – shake it out and fold it up carefully put in a separate bag (you don’t need any holes in your felt). Remove the slate screws. Mark the slate in-pieces. Mark the cabinet (both sides) where the middle in-piece is, to not to misplace it. Stack your slate off. Dismantle the base. And wrap it all up.

Can pool tables be kept outside?

No. Regular indoor pool tables are usually made of wood and felt which are not compatible with external conditions. You can risk and put the table dressed in a pool table cover outside on your covered patio if your climate is warm and dry, but we would not recommend that.

Some pool tables have weather protection or coated in moisture-resistant solution, though, which is still a doubtful thing.
